They thought she looked familiar
when she arrived at their door
they’d met her before somewhere
she mentioned friends and places they knew
she had fond memories maybe they did too
could she stay a week or two
if they had space
she needed somewhere quiet
she’d be no trouble
so in she strode or was that a jink
in the air propelling her forward
a dog drifting in behind her
and for a time the scent of roses filled
the house they’d never known before
Jane Aldous’ poems have been published in literary magazines and commended in competition. In 2012 she won The Wigtown Poetry Prize. Her first collection Let out the Djinn was published by Arachne Press in 2019 who also published her second More Patina than Gleam this year.
