The image is Sarah-Jane’s. She chose one of John’s poems and used strict erasure as a method: “Erasing John’s words was fun because poets use interesting vocabulary, so it was a richer experience than, say, erasing non-fiction (which are the types of text I usually work with). I was lucky that John isn’t egotistical, as I characteristically erased quite firmly, relying on my interpretation of the poem and a conversation with John conducted by email to draw out a different narrative to the original poem. Once the narrative was complete, I created an image that worked with the new narrative and sent the finished piece to John for feedback.”
