Holland
You wrote a poem. About Brigitte Fontaine. Holland
was in there, somewhere. Later though you removed it,
you
thought Arnhem a better fit, there wasn’t enough bite
in Holland, for you
wanted something harder, with
something harsh at the end; what it means less it
important than the sound it makes, geography not
relevant either. Holland. Do you like it? A word you’ve
not used before but which
you like, a lot. A rich hollow
sound with the hard clump at the end like the stomp of
thick boots, or a full
stop. The whole word, in the round
(if you follow me!), Holland; it sounds like a ship’s hull
hitting the
quay. And always with a Dutch
accent: you
wobble your head and set your throat back, for sure. Like
the sea,
perhaps, one big gulp and it’s gone.

* Paul Smith says… Who am I ? A professional amateur. It’s a battle and one day I will win (and lose, of course). I have a blog serenityscience.blogspot.com
My first thought on seeing this was, who is Paul Smith and why is he contemplating me?
Rather excellent poem. Though I'm not sure I enjoy being likened to a boot. especially a thick one.
JH 😉
Thank you! I think you've created a whole new country, out of my little piece.
And Paul Smith? He might be Paul Schloss in fancy dress…
I liked it too. Alex, my favourite TV cook, would say: It has something.
