Summer Plans

for Maddy

Yours is a casual voice,
sloping down
the 2nd,
8th,
20th of June
into my basin;
but I hear se  cond
lips thread back then draw together,
yarning a sound, a shiver,
mouth full in the warmest water;
eigh  th
oar slackens,
then tautens;
twen  ti  eth
light strokes on water,
yet skin ripples with effort;
boat fills up,
hold,
release;
June –
a kiss,
surfacing at last,
but the month tapers off too soon;
six words from you
on your plans for summer
means nineteen days alone,
making love of only numbers;
I did tell you I was keen.
