The Downs

Getting out of town for the day
was disappointing what with the chewed up grass
the sun like honey in porridge
and the high point that never came into view.

Some bloke was setting up an aerial
out of the boot of his car
as though signalling for help, and a pair of tights
were trodden into the mud.

Apart from dogs chasing flying rings
and a few other human beings
exhibiting the same unfathomable behaviour as us
I saw no other signs of life

but being with you I didn’t mind it all that much.
