Geminids
Warm-wrapped, commonwards,
we crackle grass-frost to stare
side by side into a sky
free of nightcloud
except for the wisps we exhale.
From all sides we’re buzzed
by coming-in-to-land lights,
so many and so bright they might
be a single plane criss-crossing
as it looks for us. Drunk, dizzy
from craning, we glimpse a meteorite,
a scratch of light no longer
than an eyelash – then a second
in a different arc of sky.
But it’s early yet, we must wait
another frozen hour,
floating handinhand
above the earth-bound planes.
There’s so much space
up here, above the rooftops!
