A Garden

There was something I
wanted to say,
now, I can’t remember.

Something about a garden and
a young man’s terrible illness.

Yes, a garden…
Richard’s garden.

Nights of planning,
pages of notes,
seedlings with difficult names,
a pergola leading in.

Here, exotic aromas,
showy abundance
invited touch.

Years of watching
this setting so rich––
it could have been painted.

In this spring,
Richard was gone.

In his garden,
all that beauty remains.

No one would say
this is too much.
