Morning Chorus
The path starts beside a village green,
travels up a narrow valley reaching
into the foothills.
A steep walk follows, through trees
above that brooding, man-made lake,
its glimmering surface.
Arriving on this flat expanse of heath,
you enter a morning chorus of finches,
wrens and martins.
Even now, you might not know how far
you need to go: some departures are not
followed by returns.
