{"id":9860,"date":"2015-12-27T09:00:41","date_gmt":"2015-12-27T09:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=9860"},"modified":"2020-12-14T11:20:25","modified_gmt":"2020-12-14T11:20:25","slug":"on-the-fifth-day-of-christmas-we-bring-you-derek-adams-and-julie-hogg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/on-the-fifth-day-of-christmas-we-bring-you-derek-adams-and-julie-hogg\/","title":{"rendered":"On the Fifth Day of Christmas we bring you Derek Adams and Julie Maclean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Devil Makes Work<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bouncing bomb Superball<br \/>\nmissed the enemy Action Man,<br \/>\nthe day after Boxing Day, to snap<br \/>\na scarlet leaf from Mum\u2019s poinsettia.<\/p>\n<p>Sap bubbled from the break<br \/>\nwhite as PVA adhesive.<br \/>\nHiding the leaf, I wiped away<br \/>\nthe evidence, nobody noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Later, prising a second leaf<br \/>\nfrom the plant, to check I\u2019d seen<br \/>\nwhat I\u2019d seen, to see once more<br \/>\nits milk white tear appear.<\/p>\n<p>I returned, again and again,<br \/>\ntook a penknife to the stalk,<br \/>\nwatched fascinated<br \/>\nas the tiny drops welled out.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered this on a hot<br \/>\nAugust night, years later,<br \/>\nthe first time I drew a red line<br \/>\nacross my arm with a Stanley knife.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Derek Adams<\/strong> is a professional photographer. He has an MA from Goldsmiths in Creative and Life Writing, and has published three poetry collections <em>Postcards from Olympus<\/em>, <em>Everyday Objects, Chance Remarks<\/em> and u<em>nconcerned but not indifferent: the life of Man Ray<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chicken was Golden<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is order here\u2028 between laminate<br \/>\nand wood veneer\u2028\u2028 knots in the heart<br \/>\nwinding out in this<br \/>\ntheatre of roasting pans.<\/p>\n<p>Prepare for the sacrifice and<br \/>\nin the depth of field<br \/>\nacres of embroidered cloth<br \/>\nto keep us pure.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s homemade everything.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But this home has settled<br \/>\nin an unsettled place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Lights are never still<br \/>\nbut flick the switch<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">to a table of nine<br \/>\nclicking knives and forks<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">clucking tongues and party hats<br \/>\n-ghosts from my past,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">now down to one\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0solitary mother<br \/>\nplus the empty chair<br \/>\nof my never returned nor forgiven.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Julie Maclean <\/strong><em>\u2019<\/em>s third collection <em>Kiss of the Viking<\/em> (Poetry Salzburg) was published in 2014.
