{"id":9716,"date":"2015-12-09T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2015-12-09T09:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=9716"},"modified":"2015-11-26T15:25:10","modified_gmt":"2015-11-26T15:25:10","slug":"phil-vernon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/phil-vernon\/","title":{"rendered":"Phil Vernon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Twenty-five years<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>For Tebo<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I waken too early, on woodsman&#8217;s toes explore<br \/>\na home that&#8217;s still, until our neighbour turns<br \/>\nthe news up loud, and you begin to snore<br \/>\nto match the rhythm of the morning trains.<\/p>\n<p>Again I discover as though surprised, the sounds<br \/>\nof dawn are sung by modern life not birds,<br \/>\nthat we inhabit cul de sacs, not glades,<br \/>\nwear dressing gowns, not bark cloth capes or furs.<\/p>\n<p>So coffee and toast, and a view of the low winter sky,<br \/>\nan hour or two at tasks brought home from work:<br \/>\nI read, respond, review, redraft, delay,<br \/>\nand listen out for when I hear you stir.<\/p>\n<p>We make pastel love, and when we look outside,<br \/>\na quiet snow has fallen across the town.<br \/>\nThe sun shines on the whitened roofs and road.<br \/>\nWe smile and put the central heating on.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Phil Vernon<\/strong> lives in Kent, and works in London for an overseas charity. He started writing poetry again in 2012 after a twenty-year break.
