{"id":9569,"date":"2015-11-21T09:00:08","date_gmt":"2015-11-21T09:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=9569"},"modified":"2020-12-09T14:59:54","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T14:59:54","slug":"clare-marsh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/clare-marsh\/","title":{"rendered":"Clare Marsh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sibling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I helped my mother pick<\/p>\n<p>ripe gooseberries<\/p>\n<p>loaded with their bitter seeds.<\/p>\n<p>She straightened up<\/p>\n<p>rested her hand on her vast belly &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>my sun was blotted out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I saw my mother rushed to hospital<\/p>\n<p>in a screaming ambulance.<\/p>\n<p>Days later she came home<\/p>\n<p>with a red-faced creature<\/p>\n<p>whose siren-shriek<\/p>\n<p>made my milk teeth curl.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I watch my mother wash<\/p>\n<p>mountains of stinking nappies.<\/p>\n<p>So I take the consolation doll<\/p>\n<p>and, with my seaside spade,<\/p>\n<p>bury it under the gooseberry bush &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>a trial run for tonight.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clare Marsh<\/strong> recently completed an Intermediate Poetry course at UEA\/WCN. She won the Sentinel Annual Short Story competition (2013).
