Barbara has generously asked that her prize be donated to the charity <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mind<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Itch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stacks of National Geographics<\/p>\n<p>filled the wardrobe to my waist.<\/p>\n<p>The dust inviting sneezes.<\/p>\n<p>Misaligned yellow spines.<\/p>\n<p>Careless visitors would toss<\/p>\n<p>them back any old way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My fingers would itch<\/p>\n<p>to restore their rightful order.<\/p>\n<p>Oh the itch, manifest many ways.<\/p>\n<p>Persistent chafe of rashes,<\/p>\n<p>result of childhood curiosities.<\/p>\n<p>The itch where my wings should be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Voters&#8217; comments included:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>It just really hits the spot &#8211; especially the bit about itching to re-organise the pile of magazines. It&#8217;s just the right mixture of lyrical and humorous, too. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Good imagery and the last line is superb. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>I have the same itch to align magazine spines! The choice and arrangement of words were pure magic, though. \ud83d\ude42 <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Stunning poem. Had to remind myself to breathe while reading it was so absorbed in it!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>I love the surprising imagery of this poem. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Her fabulous use of words<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Authentic. Makes the mundane exciting.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A number of voters mentioned how hard it was to choose this time. Comments on the other short-listed poets include:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Josep Chanz\u00e0,<em> Conversation<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0 Beautifully written and resonates with my own experience <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0 Wild imagery and powerful emotions contained by the simplicity of the structure -.the reader feels they are flying with the poet ready to catch them , despite his sorrow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Josephine Corcoran,<em> Old Girls<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0 Wonderful images and power in the restraint <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0 Since I first read it, I&#8217;ve been haunted by this poem. I was hoping it would be on the shortlist and I&#8217;m thrilled to see it there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Chrissie Cuthbertson,<em> For the last time<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0 I found the fragility and emotion in the poem very compelling. It is an everyday and inevitable process of growing, but dealt with in a very beautiful way. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0 Such a moving poem that says so much in so few words. The emotion radiating from Chrissie&#8217;s is both poignant and powerful.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">David Ishaya Osu, <em>Trance<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0 It is the one that unlocked me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0 I chose &#8220;Trance&#8221; because of its expansive sweep, how it refuses to allow any view of &#8220;the world&#8221; except as a single unit, with the implications that we all misjudge, we are all insignificant, we all fail, we are all in need of encouragement to lift us up.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Gill McEvoy, <em>Assignation<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0 The sparsity of words leads you but still leaves much to be imagined<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>\u00a0 It caught my imagination and took me to another place&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are very pleased to be able to announce that the IS&amp;T &#8216;Pick of the Month&#8217; for August is Itch by Barbara O&#8217;Donnell.
