Jigsaw Piece<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n I stride to the tarn just after noon,<\/p>\n sky grey as a heron\u2019s back.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n My feet squelch cotton grass;<\/p>\n a peewit carries in the air.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Smell of bracken leaves a tang<\/p>\n on the roof of my mouth.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n On the tarn I view a wigeon,<\/p>\n beak dipping out and in of cold water;<\/p>\n his breast a blush of pink, eyes alert.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I pick up a jigsaw piece of egg,<\/p>\n white like a snow bunting.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Put it back.<\/p>\n I take one last look,<\/p>\n turn around to walk away.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Edwin Stockdale<\/strong> was born in Chester and has lived in Lancaster.\u00a0 He currently lives in Leeds.\u00a0 Aventurine<\/em>, his debut pamphlet collection, was published last September by Red Squirrel Press.\u00a0 A full collection is forthcoming in September 2018.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Jigsaw Piece I stride to the tarn just after noon, sky grey as a heron\u2019s back.
