Third-Person Effect<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n for Ben Detenber<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Somebody\u2019s wrong on the Internet, and everyone else<\/p>\n is grabbing a mouse to be sure to get in on the clicks.<\/p>\n Some guy in Johannesburg already knocked down his Coke and destroyed<\/p>\n his keyboard, but luckily not his computer. He looks at<\/p>\n his screen, and all he can do is stare at untruth while the phone\u2019s<\/p>\n ringing the tech-support number. And now he\u2019s on hold:<\/p>\n music he\u2019s always despised is worming its wily way<\/p>\n into his brain. Can you hear it? He doesn\u2019t have<\/p>\n an icicle\u2019s chance in a Richtersveld summer. He\u2019s lost to the music<\/p>\n that somebody else in Geneva can hear and ignore.<\/p>\n Natalie\u2019s reading the page, and she\u2019s changing her mind even though<\/p>\n her English has never improved as much as she\u2019d like.<\/p>\n Maybe she wouldn\u2019t be falling for lies she was reading in French.<\/p>\n From her apartment, she has a good view of the lake<\/p>\n except that this morning the fog is so thick she can barely see<\/p>\n the building going up on the other side of the street.<\/p>\n Her coffee is ready; she carries her cup to the window to think,<\/p>\n watching the shivering people below as they wait<\/p>\n for buses to take them to work, where they\u2019ll turn on their screens and discover<\/p>\n that somebody on the Internet is wrong.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Andrew Shields<\/strong> lives in Basel, Switzerland.
