Crystal? Mirrors? Sparklers?<br \/>\nFireflies? Solar Trickery?<br \/>\nYour entries, boxed and bubblewrapped,<br \/>\nmust reach us by midday of the winter equinox.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s winner is a hard act to follow;<br \/>\nan intricate weaving of glowworms,<br \/>\ndarkness and moonlight;<br \/>\na perfect equilibrium of chiaroscuro.<\/p>\n<p>This creation lasted one night only \u2013<br \/>\nthe glowworms devoured<br \/>\nboth light and shade.<br \/>\nThey lay, plump and dim in the dawnlight<br \/>\nlike toothless vampires.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s judges are our most northerly neighbours :<br \/>\nIcelanders, Greenlanders, Swedes and Orcadians.<br \/>\nThey have all signed waivers<br \/>\nafter the Danes\u2019 scandalous looting<br \/>\nof last year\u2019s runners up.<\/p>\n<p>First prize this year is a month<br \/>\nin the southern hemisphere.<br \/>\nThe darkness is coming.<br \/>\nLight a candle to Santa Lucia<br \/>\nand try your luck.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sue Burge<\/strong> teaches creative writing and film studies.\u00a0 She is fascinated by liminal states, silent movies and fairy tales.\u00a0 Her poetry has been published in magazines such as <em>Mslexia and The North<\/em>.
