Rushaa wins a National Book Tokens \u00a310 gift card and, as the first &#8216;Pick&#8217;, a place on a <em>Lunar Poetry<\/em> workshop at <em>L&#8217;klectik<\/em> gallery, cafe, performance and (soon to be) poetry bookshop space in Waterloo, London.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another Canaan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There was a wasteland<br \/>\nand cold tire tracks in the skin of the sand.<br \/>\nI forgot I couldn\u2019t breathe.<\/p>\n<p>In the distance was something<br \/>\nI could crawl to;<br \/>\nflat lands \u2013 these were like the lands of my childhood,<br \/>\na people that weren\u2019t built for inclines<br \/>\nbut to trundle on<br \/>\never looking past the haze of dust<br \/>\nand abandoning things that could not be carried.<br \/>\nIn the rush of feet and vehicles<br \/>\nwas a cry that all things must move forward,<br \/>\namongst the heat and pain,<br \/>\nwhere the dust had been beaten down into a solid block.<\/p>\n<p>My mother said<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019ve got fire in your bones and<br \/>\nnone in your blood,<br \/>\nand hot bones break,<br \/>\nand hot sand buries broken bones.\u201d<br \/>\nA crib lingers out in the heat<br \/>\nleftover from a broken moment<br \/>\nand I am leftover too<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Voters&#8217; comments included:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I just love the soft colours of her words&#8230;.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>How the first line encapsulates the feeling of the entire poem. It all feels desolate after&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Stirs something within me<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>so full of images<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It was evocative of the desert and brought back some personal memories.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The second verse was touching and something I could relate to.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>she does an impression of a Dalek (in reference to Rushaa&#8217;s biography notes), and the poem is good<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Huge congratulations to Rushaa Louise Hamid whose Another Canaan emerged as the voters&#8217; choice for the first IS&amp;T Pick of the Month.
