New Brighton<\/span>


Amongst the clunk of metal <\/span>
Dock yards and bitter sand storms <\/span>
Our feet dapple the spongy sand <\/span>
Marking, that we\u2019ll get washed away<\/span>
Breathlessly pressed up against the fort, <\/span>
The rock at my back <\/span>
Seaweed soaks me to the scalp, tainting it green, <\/span>
Blunting the back of my head <\/span>
Crispy salt crumbles on eyelashes and lips <\/span>
The sea sprays us <\/span>
Against the wind we breathe cold air<\/span>
Like needles up nostrils<\/span>

To walk alone, <\/span>
And stand looking at the sea <\/span>
Knowing my eyes have moulded to sights <\/span>
That a year ago were unknown, <\/span>
Never pictured or imagined <\/span>
Facing the sea, I struggle to breathe<\/span>
Icy socks pushed down my throat<\/span>
I\u2019m pulled back by the sounds of you and your dog, <\/span>
Pinching my calves, fingers chasing <\/span>
Swooping across the sand, my coat a low dark blaze, <\/span>
A flag flying <\/span>
Powered by something<\/span>

I come down alone at night <\/span>
And walk out so far on the rocks that in the end, <\/span>
All there is, is sea<\/span>
It blasts my head clean with striking tentacles, <\/span>
Whips of water just missing <\/span>
As I\u2019m touched only by soft parachutes of spray <\/span>
The rumbling belly of the sea demands to be rubbed and felt<\/span>
A desire to be swallowed whole, <\/span>
Pulled into the sinking black, face up at the stars, <\/span>
The glittering office blocks <\/span>
And the spiky cathedral.<\/span>
