chosen plosives <\/span>

change shape <\/span>
on a page.<\/span>

The succulent winter melon <\/span>
lay halved<\/span>
before us, <\/span>
seeds brimming its middle.<\/span>

How do the birds get to the seeds? you asked.<\/span>
I suppose it must get broken, answered I.<\/span>

out of confusion and despair<\/span>
escape onto paper.<\/span>

dangerous<\/span>
slice deep<\/span>
to cleaner meaning. <\/span>

* Ingrid Andersen<\/span> was born in Johannesburg, read for a degree in English literature and film and theatre criticism at Wits and is presently completing her Masters. Her work has been published in poetry journals for 16 years. <\/span>Excision<\/span>, her first volume of poetry, was published in 2004 and her second, <\/span>Piece Work<\/span>, was published by Modjaji Books in September.  She is the founding editor of <\/span>Incwadi<\/span><\/a>, an online SA journal that explores the interaction between poetry and image.
