{"id":8652,"date":"2015-06-15T08:00:36","date_gmt":"2015-06-15T08:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=8652"},"modified":"2015-05-27T13:19:24","modified_gmt":"2015-05-27T13:19:24","slug":"sue-hubbard-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/sue-hubbard-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Sue Hubbard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Snow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lost in an infinity of misted mirrors<br \/>\namong shelves of Optrex,<\/p>\n<p>Pepsodent and pink calamine,<br \/>\nI dunked net petticoats into sugar solution<\/p>\n<p>to froth out the nylon frills of that<br \/>\nfirst dance dress.<\/p>\n<p>Hanging it to drip-dry over<br \/>\nthe porcelain sink I squeezed<\/p>\n<p>obdurate adolescent flesh<br \/>\ninto a rubber roll-on that chaffed my thighs,<\/p>\n<p>attaching 15 deniers<br \/>\nto silk suspenders,<\/p>\n<p>before turning to straighten<br \/>\nthe wayward seam along<\/p>\n<p>a newly shaved leg and wriggle<br \/>\ninto my strapless Wonderbra.<\/p>\n<p>Then spitting into the little<br \/>\nBakelite box to soften the black wax,<\/p>\n<p>a flick of mascara<br \/>\napplied with a tiny brush.<\/p>\n<p>Backcombing my hair, the lady<br \/>\non the Elnett tin of hairspray<\/p>\n<p>smiled with a poise<br \/>\nI could never muster.<\/p>\n<p>So much preparation<br \/>\nto end alone<\/p>\n<p>beneath the rotating mirror-ball,<br \/>\nas the last waltz faded<\/p>\n<p>and flakes of light spangled<br \/>\nmy bare arms in falling snow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sue Hubbard<\/strong> is an award-winning poet, novelist and art critic.
