The Fall<\/span>
 <\/span>

How was I to know?<\/span>

He told me he was driving<\/span>
to the mountains; a short<\/span>
climb to breath clear air and <\/span>
revel in the change of seasons.<\/span>

He said how he loved the brilliant<\/span>
colors; he waxed melancholy<\/span>
at the coming of the chill, that lonely<\/span>
feeling when the year approaches end.<\/span>

There were cliffs where you could<\/span>
touch the eagles, he said; a place<\/span>
to leave it all behind, soar like falcon<\/span>
flight when you felt your life adrift. <\/span>

“Will you take a lunch?” <\/span>I asked.<\/span>

Replying that he wouldn't need one,<\/span>
he waved, and took off down the driveway,<\/span>
(I waved right back, unconcerned)<\/span>
not knowing I'd replay the Fall <\/span>
in Technicolor slo-mo until end of days,<\/span>

for how was I to know?<\/span>
