{"id":864,"date":"2010-10-28T09:27:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-28T09:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=864"},"modified":"2010-10-28T09:27:00","modified_gmt":"2010-10-28T09:27:00","slug":"pam-thompson-has-wanderlust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/pam-thompson-has-wanderlust\/","title":{"rendered":"Pam Thompson has wanderlust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Wanderlust<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">I met her in a bar, a small woman, <\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">in a red sleeveless sweater <\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">and a Laplander&#39;s hat with strings hanging down;<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">a hat that looked like yellow wax.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">We were different, yeah, but almost the same.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">She asked me for a light, didn&#39;t even smoke.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Asked me for a light, whispered in my ear:<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Come with me to the harbour.<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Come with me to the wide open sea.<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">I&#39;ll take you to the island.<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">You can hear the sea-birds scream.<\/span><br style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">I&#39;ll take you \u2026 to the island.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Then sang a song that slashed at me<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">like knives.&nbsp; I looked into her eyes.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">She looked into my eyes. A song<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">like glass mountains cracking.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">She wore a rucksack of mud.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">I turned to mud <\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">then she carried me on her back<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">down a river of roots and veins.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">We were different, yeah, but almost the same.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">She carried me on a raft<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">propped up by owls that looked like rocks<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">with eyes and shoulders.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Underwater owls.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">Yes, I clung with arms and thighs<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">to another woman&#39;s back on a theme-park ride<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">with glass mountains rushing past.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">A theme-park ride; a river howling.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">We never reached the island.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">The owls all died. The mountains turned<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">to ice and melted , pitching us<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">through falls of freezing water.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">We were different, yeah, but almost the same.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\">One travelling: the other drowning.<\/span><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><br \/><br style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">* Pam Thompson<\/span> has had poems published in a range of anthologies and magazines and has written to commission.
