{"id":8626,"date":"2015-06-07T08:00:53","date_gmt":"2015-06-07T08:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=8626"},"modified":"2020-12-09T14:58:27","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T14:58:27","slug":"julia-stothard-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/julia-stothard-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Julia Stothard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Galleries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Walking into the intense heat<br \/>\nof a gallery, over-coated<br \/>\nand dripping, expecting<br \/>\ncanvass to speak<br \/>\nwithout the commotion of words<\/p>\n<p>I will either be stunned<br \/>\nor unimpressed but invariably<br \/>\nsilent, appraising<br \/>\nshattered faces, elephant<br \/>\ndung or flesh<br \/>\ndraped over tines and clocks.<\/p>\n<p>If it offers nothing up<br \/>\nI will add a twist of my own, conjure<br \/>\nviolent scenes the far side<br \/>\nof a Mondrian; or Turner<br \/>\nin spectacles, hurling<br \/>\nhis brushes into the sunset.<\/p>\n<p>Sculptures generally take<br \/>\nthe sweat out of it. Even<br \/>\nthe most elusive tangle of wires,<br \/>\nfold of silk, or wooden block<br \/>\narrangement is evocative<br \/>\nin some way;<\/p>\n<p>the frameworks<br \/>\nin which we live and breath.<br \/>\nFrom the blank page<br \/>\nto the Empire State, each of us<br \/>\nrepresented by one pixel<br \/>\nin the bigger picture; the TV crowd<\/p>\n<p>And every structure, a repetition<br \/>\nof ourselves or our lovers<br \/>\nturning up everywhere we look,<br \/>\nsignalling some apt association<br \/>\nknown only to us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Julia Stothard<\/strong> is a data report writer, living and working in Surrey.
