Like a light bulb\u2028\u2028<\/span>

Her long term memory is a bit of lead piping,\u2028<\/span>
one that you can protractor along to the point,<\/span>
\u2028to the pivot of the day shifting from am to pm. \u2028\u2028<\/span>

She dreams she swims underwater saying things,\u2028<\/span>
but likes looking down a smarties tube and seeing<\/span>
\u2028the lawn and her little brother<\/span>

\u2028\u2028in a photograph flying up out of the paddling pool<\/span>
\u2028his feet half in air, his hair like static,\u2028<\/span>
nothing much makes sense.\u2028\u2028<\/span>

She knows there is logic, brain mathematics -\u2028<\/span>
whole glotteral snooker balls of evening events<\/span>
\u2028that hide themselves under brain duvets;\u2028\u2028<\/span>

a table top scattered with toast crumbs,\u2028<\/span>
a beach bag on the bonnet of a car,<\/span>
\u2028a nose piercing next to a pit bull.\u2028\u2028<\/span>

The rings on her fingers are planetary pulls,<\/span>
\u2028people tell her where things live,<\/span>
\u2028her pyjamas under her pillow<\/span>

\u2028\u2028her shopping in a basket<\/span>
\u2028her heart not a pin brooch\u2028<\/span>
her panic not what people appreciate.<\/span>

\u2028\u2028Her boyfriend holds her hand in the cinema<\/span>
\u2028and in the dark she swings her foot<\/span>
\u2028Alton Towers across the carpet.\u2028\u2028<\/span>

She thinks a lot about re-starting<\/span>
\u2028about planting the things she likes<\/span>
\u2028about choosing how to react\u2028\u2028<\/span>

to strangers asking questions,\u2028<\/span>
the am pm pivot\u2028<\/span>
moving like it's meant to.<\/span>



*<\/span> <\/span>Hannah Jane Walker<\/span><\/a> is a poet serial apologist. She studied literature at UEA and a poetry MA in Newcastle.
