\nfrom my dictionary.<\/p>\n
\nwhen it happened,
\nI remember noticing them
\nfading a bit
\nwhen searching for such things as
\nthe definition of luminaria
\nhorse opera
\nor meritocracy,<\/p>\n
\nslowly morphing into gray,
\nthen eventually to
\nwhite,
\nan empty space
\nwhere I thought something
\nimportant
\nused to be,
\nlike a person, suddenly dead.<\/p>\n
\nit could only be defective ink,
\nnot an Orwellian excision
\nauthorized by some invisible
\nMinistry of Truth,
\nvanished,
\na void
\nto be filled with whatever you
\nwould replace it with
\ninstead.<\/p>\n
\nunequivocally,
\nthe shit is beaten out of us,
\nso is the love,<\/p>\n
\nlike the cops dredging a lake
\nfor a body
\nthat is probably mine,<\/p>\n
\nmany of us stuck, as always,
\nbetween a Santa and a Jesus
\nplace\u2014
\nit was easier
\nwhen we were children,
\nthen we could believe in both,<\/p>\n
\none damned bit of good
\nnow.<\/p>\n
