It\u2019s the summer solstice and we\u2019re breaking up<\/p>\n<p>except we\u2019re making love on the fifth floor<br \/>\nin an evening light as yolky as an afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The sexy doom of the split<br \/>\nis like falling in love and a stay of execution.<\/p>\n<p>Everything\u2019s alive: whelks, do-nuts.<br \/>\nThe soupy fumblings of the sea.<\/p>\n<p>Just a day trip to Seven Sisters, you said,<br \/>\nwithout the bookies. You clot with nostalgia<\/p>\n<p>for our first months, sharbing in Tottenham:<br \/>\nLadbrokes, William Hill, Paddy Power.<\/p>\n<p>The wind touches us up as we tussle<br \/>\nin the purple gorse,<\/p>\n<p>the beam of the nougat bitten cliffs,<br \/>\nand Eastbourne: ballroom dancing, plastic bed sheets, eggnog,<\/p>\n<p>women whose hearts are clamped on their faces<br \/>\nhard as wedding bands.<\/p>\n<p>Driving home (though it\u2019s no longer ours),<br \/>\nwe stop at Pease Pottage services:<\/p>\n<p>a piece of the universe<br \/>\nthat love forgot, you despair.<\/p>\n<p>I hug my knees by the window at 3am,<br \/>\nremember the sea heaving the pier\u2019s stilted limb.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Alison Winch<\/strong> has been published in <em>Rialto, Poems in Which<\/em>, and others.
