\nin our old wool coats we agree
\nthat the wobble in the axis
\nof our favorite planet corresponds
\nto the wobble in those organs
\nouter layers barely conceal.<\/p>\n
\nBuses gnash into numbered slots
\nand discharge patrons who slough
\npast us with hardly a glance.
\nBundled in red you may suggest
\na Christmas gift for the needy,<\/p>\n
\nas the reaper himself. Safer
\nfor strangers to ignore the smelting
\nof thick air around us. The cries
\nof metal on metal persist,
\nbut as skyscrapers lurch and wheel<\/p>\n
\nof the last century thicken
\ninto focus, no longer black
\nand white but raving in colors
\nwe hadn\u2019t tried to imagine.
\nWe have to re-edit and rewrite<\/p>\n
\nfrom high school onward. That text
\nleft ink smears on our bodies
\nonly the most devout lovers
\ncould have licked or abraded off.
\nThat wasn\u2019t us. The wheezing<\/p>\n
\nbut we\u2019re upholstered in our wool
\nso nothing can penetrate
\nexcept the subatomic particles
\nwe emit to hurt each other
\nsubtly enough to ignore.<\/p>\n
