{"id":7930,"date":"2014-12-28T09:00:55","date_gmt":"2014-12-28T09:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=7930"},"modified":"2020-12-14T11:18:35","modified_gmt":"2020-12-14T11:18:35","slug":"the-fifth-day-of-christmas-penelope-shuttle-and-alwyn-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/the-fifth-day-of-christmas-penelope-shuttle-and-alwyn-marriage\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fifth Day of Christmas &#8211; Penelope Shuttle,  Alwyn Marriage and Julie Hogg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Submission<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instead of a short poem<br \/>\na sonnet say or a villanelle<br \/>\nI\u2019m writing a very long one<br \/>\nperhaps about Christmas<br \/>\nperhaps not<br \/>\nforged out of iron words<br \/>\nand irony<br \/>\nand when I send it to you<br \/>\nHelen<br \/>\nit will arrive not by email<br \/>\nbut stashed on a big low-loader \u2013<br \/>\nyou\u2019ll know my poem is on the way<br \/>\nby the swirly blue watch-out lights<br \/>\nof its mile-long police motorcycle escort<br \/>\napproaching Norwich<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Penelope Shuttle<\/strong> has published ten collections since 1980. <em>UNSENT: New and Selected Poems, 1980 \u2013 2012<\/em> appeared from Bloodaxe Books in October 2012.<em>\u00a0 Redgrove\u2019s Wife<\/em>, (2006) was shortlisted for The Forward Prize and for the T S Eliot Award.\u00a0 <em>In the Snowy Air\u00a0<\/em> (Templar) is her most recent publication<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not three wise men<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Not<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more we know about what<br \/>\nthey were not, than what they were.<br \/>\nFor instance, they were not from<br \/>\nthe West, were not completely<br \/>\nuneducated, and rather than existing<br \/>\nin real life, they might have been<br \/>\nmetaphors or symbols.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bible story certainly doesn\u2019t claim<br \/>\nthat there were three of them<br \/>\nor any other number.<br \/>\nThe plural noun is used, and so it\u2019s fair<br \/>\nto deduce that at least two were involved.<br \/>\nBut any number of people can arrive<br \/>\nbearing three sorts of gifts. Maybe half a dozen<br \/>\nwere needed to carry the gold \u2013 or perhaps<br \/>\na single individual gave the baby a golden ring.<br \/>\nThe original idea of giving frankincense<br \/>\nto suggest a priestly function could have occurred<br \/>\nto several romantic, rather religious visitors,<br \/>\nwhile others just liked the smell. As for myrrh,<br \/>\nit was probably borne by someone who suffered<br \/>\noccasional deep depressions. I only hope<br \/>\nit didn\u2019t frighten the child\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It all depends how wise you think it was<br \/>\nto set off across the desert, following a star.<br \/>\nCertainly the gospel story would suggest<br \/>\nthat despite the difficulties and dangers<br \/>\nthe choice they made turned out to be<br \/>\na wise one.<br \/>\nBut wise in the conventional sense?<br \/>\nNo, I don\u2019t think so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no suggestion in the bible<br \/>\nthat all these eastern visitors were male.<br \/>\nIf they were sages, astronomers or intellectuals,<br \/>\nthen it\u2019s more than possible<br \/>\nthat some of them were women.<br \/>\nAfter all, which gender is more likely<br \/>\nto travel miles to visit a new baby,<br \/>\nand shower him with gifts?<br \/>\nIt\u2019s a great story, which like the magi<br \/>\nhas travelled down many years<br \/>\npicking up various particles<br \/>\nof dust along the way;<br \/>\nbut whatever else it\u2019s all about<br \/>\nit\u2019s surely not three wise men.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/alwyn.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0Alwyn Marriag<\/a>e<\/strong>\u2019s poetry and non-fiction are published widely. Following an academic career and nine years travelling the world as Director of international NGOs, she is now Managing Editor of Oversteps Books.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Happy Birthday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Early evening dusk<br \/>\nwas closing minds up<br \/>\nwhen we found a door<br \/>\nin the wall which could<br \/>\nalways keep a secret.<\/p>\n<p>The garden was deserted<br \/>\nexcept for us and we<br \/>\nstepped into in-between<br \/>\ntimes, rushed through<br \/>\nbushes, you tripped up<\/p>\n<p>skidding on silver tinsel<br \/>\nstones under branches<br \/>\nfilled with flimsy frost<br \/>\nwhere red bauble berries<br \/>\nhung, clung like a life-<\/p>\n<p>blood laden laquer,<br \/>\npossibilities plastered<br \/>\nthe air, new words<br \/>\nintermittently studded<br \/>\nthe sky, we rolled them<\/p>\n<p>up on our tongues,<br \/>\nyou blushed. Well, it<br \/>\nwasn\u2019t like that really,<br \/>\nuntil our imaginations<br \/>\ncollided and it was.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Julie Hogg<\/strong> began writing poetry following an MA in Creative Writing at the University of Teesside and can\u2019t stop.
