{"id":7816,"date":"2014-12-10T09:00:26","date_gmt":"2014-12-10T09:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=7816"},"modified":"2014-11-29T11:55:48","modified_gmt":"2014-11-29T11:55:48","slug":"john-grey-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/john-grey-2\/","title":{"rendered":"John Grey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lazy Joe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Such a sullen beast, that heart,<br \/>\nand fat and listless, gorging on blood<br \/>\nthat comes so easy to it with every lazy pump;<br \/>\nand the lungs, more creatures with nothing better to do<br \/>\nthat devour great lumps of air. rattle the stuff around<br \/>\nin old cigarette-stained sacs then wheeze it out<br \/>\nlike a leaking tire.<\/p>\n<p>And the mind is a creepy blob-monster in a cave.<br \/>\nstill and silent but for a long grotesque red tongue<br \/>\nthat zaps thoughts like flies:<br \/>\nso what can the body do but obey orders,<br \/>\nslump into chairs, crawl up on sofas.<br \/>\nooze under sheets, take up space.<\/p>\n<p>Only the mouth protests this languor,<br \/>\nattempts every now and then to fight back a little;<br \/>\n&#8220;yes I promise.&#8221; it says, and believes,<br \/>\n&#8220;I will. I will,&#8221; it adds and is never surer;<br \/>\nbut gross and slow and unwilling is the soul swine:<br \/>\nwhen necessary for survival, it sits heavy on his life;<br \/>\nat the first sign of intention, it knows where to find him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Grey<\/strong> is an Australian born poet.
