{"id":7635,"date":"2014-11-21T09:00:25","date_gmt":"2014-11-21T09:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=7635"},"modified":"2014-11-02T14:24:27","modified_gmt":"2014-11-02T14:24:27","slug":"terry-quinn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/terry-quinn\/","title":{"rendered":"Terry Quinn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two Benches Away<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Screaming to a halt,<br \/>\nand I mean screaming,<br \/>\nthey fell onto the bench<br \/>\nthe wheel chair not suited<br \/>\nto the steep slopes of Criccieth.<br \/>\nThey were still laughing<br \/>\nwhen the rest of them arrived,<br \/>\nresidents and carers,<br \/>\nout for more than a stroll<br \/>\non a promenade flatter than accents.<\/p>\n<p>I held the phone so you could hear voices<br \/>\nfull of castles and laughter,<br \/>\nand you said something that surprised me,<br \/>\nsomething about words,<br \/>\nabout the naming of things,<br \/>\nand for a second I was lost,<\/p>\n<p>you said Care and Residential,<br \/>\nand it brought back homes,<br \/>\nthe Nursing Homes where my brief visits<br \/>\nwould interrupt the routine,<br \/>\nwhere the armchairs were benches<br \/>\nand the patients were boulders<br \/>\nsurrounded by crisps, fag ends<br \/>\nand pools drying in the afternoon sun<br \/>\nwith big screen views of Arizona<br \/>\nor a game show from Pebble Mill.<br \/>\nBut I did nothing, I did my job,<br \/>\nchased up an extra biscuit,<br \/>\ntalked about holidays<br \/>\nand looked the other way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Terry Quinn<\/strong> was a Medical Engineer before retiring in 2012.
