{"id":7620,"date":"2014-11-17T09:00:24","date_gmt":"2014-11-17T09:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=7620"},"modified":"2014-11-02T13:20:10","modified_gmt":"2014-11-02T13:20:10","slug":"lewis-brown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/lewis-brown\/","title":{"rendered":"Lewis Brown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>The Night Train<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Conductor, send my love on the Night Train.<br \/>\nThe fast train.<br \/>\nThe sleek black bullet flying straight as a shot train.<br \/>\nI want it sent first-class, post-haste<br \/>\ndelays notwithstanding<br \/>\nno missed connections, signal failures<br \/>\nno leaves on the line, and not a flake of the wrong kind of snow<br \/>\nbecause I\u2019m sending my love on the Night Train.<\/p>\n<p>I considered freight, but it seemed too impersonal<br \/>\nasked a courier, but he didn\u2019t handle it properly<br \/>\ntried mail, but the postman didn\u2019t understand<br \/>\ntried smoke signals, carrier pigeon, message in a bottle<br \/>\neven the internet<br \/>\nbut in the end I decided on the Night Train<br \/>\nbecause the rocking of the carriage is gentle<br \/>\nand railway tracks are so much longer than arms.<\/p>\n<p>You see, I can\u2019t always reach the people that matter<br \/>\nand if I did I wouldn\u2019t know what to say<br \/>\nso I\u2019m sending my love on the Night Train<br \/>\nstopping at London, Peterborough, York, Newcastle, Edinburgh<br \/>\nBelfast, Stockholm, Bergen, Vilnius-<br \/>\n-I\u2019m sorry conductor, you\u2019re just going to have to find a way.<br \/>\nAnd I hope you speak English, Welsh, Swedish, Norwegian, Lithuanian, two kinds of Elvish and the Black Speech of Mordor<br \/>\nbecause I don\u2019t.<br \/>\nThat would be ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>I will admit<br \/>\nthere is a lot that could go wrong.<br \/>\nI\u2019m sending my love<br \/>\nbut it has such a long way to go.<br \/>\nIt gets exhausted sometimes<br \/>\nit inexcusably can\u2019t be bothered sometimes<br \/>\nin fact, it may lose its railcard<br \/>\nforget its luggage<br \/>\nmisplace its tickets<br \/>\n-yes I know it would have been cheaper<br \/>\nhad I booked sooner-<br \/>\nit might fall asleep<br \/>\nmiss its stop<br \/>\nmight even get on the wrong train entirely,<br \/>\nso be careful with it.<\/p>\n<p>Stoke the boilers<br \/>\nfire the engines<br \/>\nblow the whistle<br \/>\nand send my love<br \/>\non the Night Train.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lewis Brown<\/strong> is a young writer and performance poet, based in the North East of England and Edinburgh.
