{"id":7327,"date":"2014-09-12T07:00:20","date_gmt":"2014-09-12T07:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=7327"},"modified":"2014-09-12T07:11:40","modified_gmt":"2014-09-12T07:11:40","slug":"gale-acuff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/gale-acuff\/","title":{"rendered":"Gale Acuff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blush<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love everybody but most of all<br \/>\nit&#8217;s Miss Hooker, my Sunday School teacher,<br \/>\nwe&#8217;re going to get married one day, don&#8217;t<br \/>\nask me how I know, I guess God told me<br \/>\nsomehow, whispered in my ear when I was<br \/>\nasleep, which was good of Him because I<br \/>\nlove Miss Hooker more than I love<br \/>\nHim or Jesus or the Holy Ghost, which<br \/>\nI think is what they call blasphemy, she&#8217;s<br \/>\nsomething like the Golden Calf but let me<br \/>\nexplain in case God&#8217;s listening or reading<br \/>\nover my shoulder, if He can read, I<br \/>\nthink He can write anyway, didn&#8217;t He<br \/>\nwrite the Ten Commandments, at least in that<br \/>\nmovie and I think in Technicolor<br \/>\nbut anyway I was going to say<br \/>\nbefore God catches onto me and damns<br \/>\nme to Hell that I love Miss Hooker<br \/>\nmore because somehow together we can<br \/>\nhave babies but come to think of it she<br \/>\nand God could, too, it&#8217;s called the virgin birth<br \/>\nand it happened to Mary and lo and<br \/>\nbehold she had Jesus. What&#8217;s a virgin?<br \/>\nI&#8217;m not really sure but then I&#8217;m only<br \/>\nten years old to Miss Hooker&#8217;s 25<br \/>\nand after class today I asked her if<br \/>\nshe is one, a virgin I mean, and she<br \/>\nwent all red in the face, it&#8217;s called blushing,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s as close as you get to blood without<br \/>\nthe bleeding and that should tell me something<br \/>\nbut it didn&#8217;t. She said a gentleman<br \/>\ndoesn&#8217;t ask a lady such a question,<br \/>\nnot if he wants her to respect him. So<br \/>\nI said Yes ma&#8217;am and when I got home from<br \/>\nSunday School, I felt like I was baptized<br \/>\nagain, I asked Mother the same thing and<br \/>\nshe chuckled and said, Yes, and Father burst<br \/>\nout laughing, so I joined them. There you go.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gale Acuff<\/strong> has had poetry published in <em>Ascent, Ohio Journal, Descant, Adirondack Review, Concho River Review, Worcester Review, Maryland Poetry Review, Florida Review, South Carolina Review, Arkansas Review, Carolina Quarterly, Poem, South Dakota Review, Santa Barbara Review, Sequential Art Narrative in Education,<\/em> and many other journals.
