Saturday Night in St. Ives<\/span>
 <\/span>
The snack van is closing \u2013<\/span>
a steel sheet padlocked over the hatch,<\/span>
hot oil fed down the drain.<\/span>
 <\/span>
The owner sweeps up kebab shavings<\/span>
like scraps of leather, tissues like carnations.<\/span>
 <\/span>
Clubbers stumble past, joined like teams<\/span>
in a three-legged race.<\/span>
 <\/span>
A young woman presses her bare breasts<\/span>
against the window of a taxi.<\/span>
 <\/span>
Two men in shirt-sleeves confront<\/span>
each other with blank faces, bright eyes.<\/span>
 <\/span>
A police dog strains on its leash, clawing air.<\/span>
 <\/span>
An old man leans out above a shop<\/span>
and is met by a roar of abuse.<\/span>
 <\/span>
Someone runs and drop-kicks the grill<\/span>
protecting a display of sun-bleached postcards<\/span>
and jars of powdered sweets \u2013<\/span>
unchanged for decades.<\/span>
 <\/span>
Beneath the statue in Market Square<\/span>
a couple are almost having sex.<\/span>
 <\/span>
Above them towers Cromwell,<\/span>
taking inhuman strides, Bible underarm.<\/span>
 <\/span>
He lived here for three years,<\/span>
refining his model of a new society.<\/span>
 <\/span>
The sun rises on blood-splashed cobbles.<\/span>
The flat water-meadows. The wide, vague skies.<\/span>
 <\/span>
 <\/span>

 <\/span>
The Pier<\/span>
 <\/span>
Families stand at the end; a grey vacancy.<\/span>
The wind blows them closer,<\/span>
fearing they might be blown apart.<\/span>
 <\/span>
Pointing at starlings, they say to their children:<\/span>
like leaves; a scarf; a genie;<\/span> or nothing.<\/span>
A gull\u2019s cry sharpens against the flinty sky.<\/span>
 <\/span>
A gold-toothed attendant watches the kids.<\/span>
The slot-machines make it impossible<\/span>
to hear each other, should someone speak.<\/span>
 <\/span>
We group round a game, fists full of change,<\/span>
watching coins slalom and fall flat,<\/span>
then walk the plank to the top-heavy ledge<\/span>
 <\/span>
where they hang, supported by their own weight.<\/span>
If a dislodged penny pings in the tray, you\u2019re lucky.<\/span>
To push your luck would set alarm bells ringing.<\/span>
