KITE-FLYING<\/span>

\n <\/span>

\nThe bold colours of the kites<\/span>

\nagainst the bold light blue<\/span>

\nof the Spanish sky and<\/span>

\nthe bold dark blue of the sea.<\/span>

\nWhat little breeze there is<\/span>

\ncups the kites, keeps them up.<\/span>

\nNaked, we are as drawn<\/span>

\nin felt-tip: pink and brown<\/span>

\nand black. The yellow sand;<\/span>

\nthe ruled-line horizon;<\/span>

\nthe kites, higher, higher.<\/span>

LEAVES<\/span>
 <\/span>
1.<\/span>
Children talk and chase<\/span>
where some autumn leaves<\/span>
fall. Gusts are sudden<\/span>
and the leaves swirl around<\/span>
them before subsiding<\/span>
again, though the children<\/span>
are oblivious,<\/span>
properly intent<\/span>
on their games, what<\/span>
someone shouted: the reel,<\/span>
the churn, the twine of leaves<\/span>
is irrelevant.<\/span>
 <\/span>
2.<\/span>
It\u2019s that best kind of<\/span>
English light, as if<\/span>
filtered through the shrivelling<\/span>
leaves themselves, like stained<\/span>
glass made from their<\/span>
brevity, that sheen \u2013<\/span>
like sepia, almost \u2013<\/span>
even now, even as<\/span>
it happens, the past<\/span>
already present;<\/span>
this northern temper,<\/span>
things beginning to drift. <\/span>
 <\/span>
