Keith Dawson<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Snapping the louvres shut against the night<\/p>\n<p>I brush against the sculpture you once owned<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The Citizen, a muscled hero, naked<\/p>\n<p>except for a belted skin around the loins.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He reminded you, perhaps, of nights you\u2019d spent<\/p>\n<p>with crophaired men brought home from Earl\u2019s Court bars,<\/p>\n<p>check shirts stretched tight across their chests, and eyes<\/p>\n<p>flicking round the room as they raised their beer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Was it bought before or after the diagnosis<\/p>\n<p>and the doctor\u2019s cold advice: You won\u2019t live long,<\/p>\n<p>enjoy your money now?\u00a0 As your eyes lingered<\/p>\n<p>on the barrelled torso, from the bath you lay in,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>you must have thought of the gym-toned lover<\/p>\n<p>whose sickness you inherited.\u00a0 The water<\/p>\n<p>turned slowly red.\u00a0 Tonight, as fog billows<\/p>\n<p>around our house, I think of you that evening,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>when mist rolled up from the void, wrapping you<\/p>\n<p>in an embrace as gentle as his strong arms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Antony Mair<\/strong> recently returned to England after seven years in France, and now writes poetry in Hastings, East Sussex, on a daily basis. \u00a0He is an active member of the Brighton Stanza group and the Hastings Arts Forum Poets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Liebestod i.m.
