{"id":716,"date":"2010-06-19T17:24:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-19T17:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=716"},"modified":"2010-06-19T17:24:00","modified_gmt":"2010-06-19T17:24:00","slug":"beverly-ellis-remembers-bloody-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/beverly-ellis-remembers-bloody-sunday\/","title":{"rendered":"Beverly Ellis remembers Bloody Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\" size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">With the historic Saville Inquiry into the Bloody Sunday shootings in Northern Ireland in 1972 published earlier this week, we have a timely reflection here on those events&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">One Sunday<\/span><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Every Sunday teatime, the same:<br \/>salad or sandwiches, tinned fruit, tinned milk, cake \u2013<br \/>a BBC drama series on TV: <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Children of the New Forest<\/span><br \/>where I learned to fear the Roundheads for ousting a hopeless king<br \/>and hid with velvet lordlings behind the sofa<br \/>as grim-faced men pound sword-hilts on the door. <br \/>And how I dreaded Madame Defarge,<br \/>cackling, toothless, pipe clamped in her jaw,<br \/>knitting beside the guillotine while heads bounce into baskets. <br \/>Biggest nightmare: <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Last of the Mohicans<\/span>,<br \/>Magwa, tomahawk man, sudden as snake-bite,<br \/>wolf-howl warlord of the shaved and tattooed Huron. <br \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Six O\u2019Clock News<\/span> and I watch<br \/>dazed people stagger, bleeding, through a hail of bullets<br \/>as the city burns and raiders loot their homes<br \/>and the newsreader says that this is Britain.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">* Beverly Ellis<\/span> is a poet working in the east of England.
