The summer we carried the puppies up the garden.<\/span>
Four cousins, each with their own damp handful<\/span>
of fur, paw tongue. The animal smell.<\/span>
We knelt in the grass to make them beds.<\/span>

all of them squirming in the sun. <\/span>

I chose Chloe. Wet-black coat, white belly.<\/span>
