\nin the loam, churns his way back and forth,
\nnorth to south, in a whirlwind of gulls
\nand hummingbird angels darting and seeking,
\nwings skinny with frost.<\/p>\n
\nHe is whistling as dawn unwinds across the fields,
\nhauling on the wheel to spare worm and beetle,
\neasing the Fergie gently into the air
\nabove an exodus of spiders.<\/p>\n
\nbreath hanging in drifts of bramble.
\nThe first rays of sun burnish the bonnet;
\nhe smiles, checks his watch and heads for home
\ndown Salthouse Lane<\/p>\n
\nspilling veils of steam to billow on the tide
\nto Piel Island and beyond
\nwhere Stan is on his boat quietly
\ncasting for herring.<\/p>\n
\nHe has been here before but no one really
\nremembers. Here, they just get on.
\nNo one wants to know his name;
\nno one cares.<\/p>\n
\nmanure steams in the chill air,
\nhorses snort and stamp.
\nThere\u2019s a Norton in the milking shed
\nand a raft of clouds tethered in the orchard.<\/p>\n
\nPeople are busy eating and drinking, buying and selling,
\nplanting and building.
\nWhen no one is watching, who knows what goes on…
\nhe\u2019s not one to judge.<\/p>\n
