font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><font size=\"2\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The alkaline white histories are as permanent as anyone gets, bone<br \/>\npure, salt cured, and the bike rides like a hot spider on the back of a burning<br \/>\ndeck, and all the sea is white cream fire, and the outskirts of Las Vegas<br \/>\nrecede into the blood of evening, a McCarthy trick that leaves you thinking<br \/>\nthis apocalypse is an old century, and singularity your necessity, skirting<br \/>\nBadwater, only to be extinguished by the skillet heat of the desert, any time,<br \/>\nnight or day, Jurassic or primeval prehistory, basket days, Sweet Grass or<br \/>\nHupa, the darkness suffocates, and you climb downward into Furnace Creek, into<br \/>\nthe raw subterrain of another volcanic aftermath, <i style=\"\">t\u00fcmpisa<\/i>, a rock paint region defined on the maps by its ability to<br \/>\nexorcise even the more persistent ghosts, and you wonder why that little guy in<br \/>\nthe only store for a hundred miles doesn\u2019t charge a ten spot at the door, air<br \/>\ncooled by what seem the insidious machines of the future, here in the heart of<br \/>\nenemy earth, the tires bubbling like fresh batter on the black macadam, and<br \/>\nthere is no way you can stand, let alone sleep, the scorpions sizzling, the<br \/>\ndarkness a monster, it teeth the iron heat, and so, weary as a dead man walking<br \/>\nthe hundred mile stretch a hundred years before, you climb up the slow valley<br \/>\ntoward the heaven of funeral hills and another desert, this one out of the<br \/>\npost-apocalyptic, this one simmering in the rains and artesian blessings that<br \/>\nhave refused to die in heat beneath, this water-rock desert in its rough sand<br \/>\nblasts of spring, a place where the light is not absorbed, and time does not<br \/>\nstop, and at last in the purer darkness of starlight you can sleep. <br \/><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><font size=\"2\"><br \/><span lang=\"EN-US\"><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;\"><font size=\"2\"><br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;
