Dressmaking<\/span>

They might have thought she was dead,<\/span>
the sailors, as they docked opposite her door, <\/span>
as if some trick of the light <\/span>

would dupe them into seeing her propped <\/span>
in a black box by the stove, but truly she\u2019d be<\/span>
dictating stitches whilst they crossed<\/span>

the quay tilting cheap coffins and tea chests<\/span>
onto the waiting carts. The date of her daughter\u2019s<\/span>
birth was the last thing she\u2019d written<\/span>

in thread, an epitaph before paralysis<\/span>
struck. Cut it on the bias<\/span> she\u2019d call, <\/span>
tack it back<\/span> as the little girl\u2019s fingers <\/span>

clipped the fabric, felt it fall to a floor<\/span>
numb with her mother\u2019s sprinkled pins.<\/span>
