Luxembourg, 1942\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n If he could tell you<\/p>\n he would say that<\/p>\n it feels nothing like falling asleep<\/p>\n there is no well lit cinemascope<\/p>\n flashback of your life<\/p>\n he would say that<\/p>\n he remembered, not everything<\/p>\n not even necessarily the good things<\/p>\n the first time he walked into the Prospect Park Zoo<\/p>\n laughing as the elephant moms bathed their children<\/p>\n with water collected in their trunks<\/p>\n his grandmother eccentric as only<\/p>\n Italian heritage can give you<\/p>\n but maker of the most delicious<\/p>\n cheesecake east of the Hudson<\/p>\n and his brother, Steve, so burdened with life<\/p>\n except that one night on Coney Island<\/p>\n the sun painting across the sky in gold,<\/p>\n white, scarlet, lilac, fuchsia,<\/p>\n and the bluest sky he had ever seen,<\/p>\n until Luxembourg, first tour, 1942, 9th Infantry,<\/p>\n Private First Class 12123586<\/p>\n when a bullet took away his ability to walk<\/p>\n and he was carried on a makeshift stretcher<\/p>\n through a field of wheat, which<\/p>\n he had always thought sounded like the waves<\/p>\n but when the wind is in the right mood<\/p>\n the moving stalks sound somewhere between<\/p>\n stern and outright angry<\/p>\n as if the very earth was running out of space<\/p>\n to keep the blood<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Matt Macdonald<\/strong> is an Edinburgh based poet, who performs across the Central Belt.
