Take a piece of satin, blue sheen,<\/p>\n
appliqu\u00e9 to cool shadows<\/p>\n
under a generosity of willow.<\/p>\n
So many ducks this year.<\/p>\n
You\u2019ll have your work cut out<\/p>\n
to stitch them into the scene.<\/p>\n
Whole families of them squatting<\/p>\n
on the green between prison houses.<\/p>\n
Forty, fifty, more. Take a piece<\/p>\n
of brown worsted, stitch<\/p>\n
a mother duck, purposeful,<\/p>\n
proud, her neck and head stiff<\/p>\n
like an umbrella handle.\u00a0 Some<\/p>\n
of the women rise early to feed them<\/p>\n
on yesterday\u2019s sandwiches.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s against the rules but they know<\/p>\n
mothers needs encouragement,<\/p>\n
need a little help along the way.<\/p>\n
Take a piece of white thread,<\/p>\n
stitch a discreet trail of breadcrumbs<\/p>\n
leading away from the window.<\/p>\n

In the hour\u2019s Association Time<\/p>\n
they give their bodies up to sun,<\/p>\n
some stick-straight, some<\/p>\n
curved, coiled, clustered<\/p>\n
on the embankment –<\/p>\n
a reckoning in roman numerals,<\/p>\n
a cyphered message<\/p>\n
that can only be read from the moon.<\/p>\n

spin it to a dull pallor,<\/p>\n
scar it with snags,<\/p>\n
pin it to a bed<\/p>\n
in the shape of a woman.<\/p>\n
