The Water Lines<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n See – across the pale bright stream, above the water line,<\/p>\n a small tree bends, its branches moving bare against a spring-clear sky.<\/p>\n Below, its darker twin,<\/p>\n conjoined at water\u2019s edge where tree base touches blacker base.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Branches, thus reflected into searching roots,<\/p>\n finger water as it flows.<\/p>\n In depths they shiver,<\/p>\n reaching further than their airy twins above.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n These curious roots below the water line descend,<\/p>\n they stir the ooze of older times,<\/p>\n disturb and trouble memory,<\/p>\n dredge up old things, corrupt and rusted.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Just as the iceberg holds unseen, unknown,<\/p>\n below the water line, its vast and occult store of frozen motion,<\/p>\n so flowing histories are stopped, encrusted,<\/p>\n hidden under weed and mud.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Above, bare branches sprout and sprig with feathered shoots<\/p>\n probe the lucid reaches of the sky.<\/p>\n The twins that lie below embrace a darker treasure,<\/p>\n ancient dragon hoards of mould,<\/p>\n kept forever, sealed below the water line.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Chris Michaelides<\/strong>\u00a0was born in a village that gradually became an outer London suburb. She now lives in as small\u00a0 and remote a village in East Anglia as is compatible with the daily journey to work.
