A lost poem<\/span>

prickles the tip <\/span>
of your tongue<\/span>
the back of your throat<\/span>
like  a coat in mothballs<\/span>
which you might<\/span>
have sent to Oxfam<\/span>
laughs in your sleep<\/span>
waking to a glass<\/span>
half empty<\/span>
the memory of a name<\/span>
you know it was here somewhere<\/span>
when you sniff the air<\/span>
the tang of autumn<\/span>
in August<\/span>
the one you thought you put<\/span>
in a purse<\/span>
in a pocket<\/span>
in a drawer<\/span>
in the attic<\/span>
or the one that was never in your head<\/span>
only your heart<\/span>
the one that promised all<\/span>
and left<\/span>

not like the found <\/span>
which lies on its back<\/span>
in the middle of the road<\/span>
lets you tickle its ears <\/span>
follows you home<\/span>
lolls in front of the fire<\/span>
leaves hair all over your lap<\/span>
