The Sheds<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Sheds: haunches nestled into<\/p>\n banked earth.\u00a0 Cow parsley, ragwort,<\/p>\n bedding high sides.\u00a0 Blunt faces<\/p>\n nose-ringed with hanging padlocks.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Inside, a stook of exhausted<\/p>\n spades, a knackered<\/p>\n wheelbarrow, face-down,<\/p>\n a crippled bike, kept for spares.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Here, where the sheds are,<\/p>\n clocks run slow.\u00a0 One man,<\/p>\n slouched in a doorway,<\/p>\n hand-rolls a cigarette.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Another taps out a briar<\/p>\n onto a windowsill<\/p>\n and then repacks the bowl.<\/p>\n Rapt, he stares across the match flame.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Kids roll and scatter,<\/p>\n break like high-tide<\/p>\n at the allotment’s edge.<\/p>\n They watch, uncomprehending,<\/p>\n <\/p>\n the semaphore of sweet-peas,<\/p>\n rocking, bean-rows, carrot-tops;<\/p>\n the closed and secret faces<\/p>\n of the sheds.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The sun goes down<\/p>\n behind the recreation ground,<\/p>\n Breaking ranks, shadow-wrapped,<\/p>\n the houses sidle in.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Dick Jones<\/strong>\u00a0has been published in a number of magazines, print and online, including\u00a0Orbis, The Interpreter\u2019s House, Poetry Ireland Review, Qarrtsiluni, Westwords, Mipoesias, Three Candles, Other Poetry, Rattlesnak<\/em>e and\u00a0Ouroboros Review<\/em>.
