Fred, Half Dead, Beethoven In His Head<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n You can\u2019t talk to Beethoven<\/p>\n on a bus stop in Chicago<\/p>\n because you\u2019ll just get lost.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Lauded as a genius,<\/p>\n he can\u2019t give good directions<\/p>\n because he\u2019s dead.<\/p>\n .<\/p>\n Ask Fred about Beethoven<\/p>\n about Fred<\/p>\n his hands waving wildly with excitement like<\/p>\n the vibrations coming up through his feet.<\/p>\n conducting symphonies in an empty room.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Fred will tell you how planets hum<\/p>\n give directions to angry flocks of pigeons<\/p>\n lecture on string theory<\/p>\n like harpsichords, and how Beethoven was more<\/p>\n of a transcriber than a composer.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I picture the two sitting together<\/p>\n lost in deep conversation.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Holly Day<\/strong> is a housewife and mother of two living in Minneapolis, Minnesota who teaches needlepoint classes for the Minneapolis school district and writing classes at The Loft\u00a0 Literary Center. Her poetry has recently appeared in The Tampa Review, The Comstock Review, and the St. Paul Almanac, and she is the 2011 recipient of the Sam Ragan Poetry Prize from Barton College.
