On Any Given Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She’s on the only rock still standing,<\/p>\n

tide rolling in around her.<\/p>\n

She’s at the edge of the land,<\/p>\n

the very tip of what’s solid underfoot.<\/p>\n

Waves slap on either side<\/p>\n

with such ferocity<\/p>\n

but she remains so calm, unmoved.<\/p>\n

The moon can play its games with ocean<\/p>\n

all it wants<\/p>\n

but she’s no piece on its explosive board.<\/p>\n

The pounding can’t break into her thoughts.<\/p>\n

The electric spray could never be<\/p>\n

so far from her emotions.<\/p>\n

She’s at Tanglewood, engulfed in Haydn.<\/p>\n

She’s in her husband’s arms,<\/p>\n

Cocoa Beach, honeymoon hotel<\/p>\n

She’s counting the teeth in her children’s heads.<\/p>\n

She’s strolling a forest trail, deep in the Berkshires.<\/p>\n

Eventually, the tide retreats.<\/p>\n

It knows when it’s defeated.<\/p>\n

There’s not just one rock now.<\/p>\n

There’s many glistening gray stones.<\/p>\n

But there’s only the one woman.<\/p>\n

Remember that, next time the tide rolls in.<\/p>\n
