The poems in her pamphlet <i style=\"\">Skylight <\/i>brim with the minute<br \/>\nparticulars of daily life. Much of this collection is set in the 50s and 60s;<br \/>\nhowever this is not mere nostalgia. Bromley writes of the past with purpose. We<br \/>\nmay be in world of The Dave Clark Five, Radio Luxemburg, Ovaltine and Wright\u2019s<br \/>\ncoal tar soap but she has skilfully rooted events amongst the products and<br \/>\nmusic of another generation to effectively prove that the issues themselves<br \/>\nwhich include; a teenager at odds with his parents and&nbsp;a first crush, are<br \/>\nstill part of the human condition today. &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0.1pt 0cm; text-align: center;\"><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0.1pt 0cm; text-align: left;\"><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\">Bromley\u2019s<br \/>\nnarrators are wise women, who offer their experience in a gentle reminiscing<br \/>\ntone \u2018\u2018What comes back to me,\u2019\u2019 \u2018\u2018She was chalk to my mother\u2019s cheese\u2019\u2019 so that<br \/>\nreading them resembles listening to an elderly friend. If the first part of the<br \/>\npamphlet deals with teenage years, the latter part concerns itself with the<br \/>\nproblems of adulthood. In \u2018The lovers\u2019 Bromley uses her considerable technical<br \/>\nskill to copy the embarrassment and clumsiness of a couples \u2018first time\u2019.<br \/>\n&nbsp;In the opening line speech is employed effectively \u2018\u2018<i style=\"\">let\u2019s do it<\/i> he said,\u2019\u2019 revealing that the euphemism for sex has not<br \/>\nchanged over the decades, thereby reinforcing the sense of continuity felt in<br \/>\nthe pamphlet.&nbsp; In other poems such as \u2018DIY\u2019 and \u2018Heading for the Hurst\u2019<br \/>\nher narrators permit women to be kinder to themselves. The lexis in \u2018DIY\u2019 takes<br \/>\nthe form of gentle instruction to a nervous young mother \u2018\u2018Listen\u2019\u2019, \u2018\u2018Don\u2019t<br \/>\nfret about the damp patch\u2019\u2019 And in \u2018Heading for Hurst\u2019, a daughter allows<br \/>\nherself time away from looking after mother in order to \u2018\u2018breathe again. <i style=\"\">Breathe<\/i>.\u2019\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0.1pt 0cm; text-align: center;\"><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0.1pt 0cm; text-align: left;\"><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-family: &quot;Courier New&quot;;\">The pamphlet<br \/>\nalso comprises of more straightforward memories that reflect upon; rivals in<br \/>\nlove, a stale relationship and the joy of being a grandmother.
