{"id":6375,"date":"2014-02-23T09:00:14","date_gmt":"2014-02-23T09:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=6375"},"modified":"2014-01-29T16:27:34","modified_gmt":"2014-01-29T16:27:34","slug":"sue-rose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/sue-rose\/","title":{"rendered":"Sue Rose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isolation Experiment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I play solitaire for hours, soothed<br \/>\nby the patterns of wooden balls.<br \/>\nThis waiting is a perfect science.<br \/>\nI have everything I need<br \/>\nto measure the transition of my body<br \/>\nfrom one moment to the next.<\/p>\n<p>If I could count how many<br \/>\naverage breaths make up an hour,<br \/>\nplot blood pressure or temperature<br \/>\nlike constellations to guide a ship,<br \/>\nI could gauge how long<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve been here, how long to go.<\/p>\n<p>I can feel all thirty feet of mortar<br \/>\npressing down on this Plexiglass cube<br \/>\nas I listen to the regular beat of blood,<br \/>\nthe creaking and sighing as my body<br \/>\ngoes about its business, each breath<br \/>\nlike the rush and retreat of the waves.<\/p>\n<p>The intercom on the wall is my oracle\u2014<br \/>\nI wait beneath it on my knees, pray<br \/>\nfor it to speak, tell me my time is up.<br \/>\nI think sometimes I\u2019m mad<br \/>\nwith the imperfect silence. I shout<br \/>\nand curse and beg, but no one comes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sue Rose<\/strong> is currently translating a fantasy novel series billed as the French Harry Potter. Her debut poetry collection, <em>From the Dark Room<\/em>, was published by Cinnamon Press (2011- <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cinnamonpress.com\/from-the-dark-room\/\">http:\/\/www.cinnamonpress.com\/from-the-dark-room\/<\/a><\/span>).
