Ornithology<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Here, where no one seems to walk,<\/p>\n they couldn’t give the name\u00a0of\u00a0a bird<\/p>\n whose loosely gathered congregation<\/p>\n sweeps the mild midwinter sky<\/p>\n between Miami and Boca.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And so I noted down the details<\/p>\n to help me find it later: the lightly<\/p>\n coloured head it’s hard to see<\/p>\n beyond\u00a0its dark expansive<\/p>\n wings, the blunt edge of its tail.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The one time I saw them grounded<\/p>\n I sensed how even they were anchored<\/p>\n to necessity, their trailing wings<\/p>\n the robes of Rembrandt scholars<\/p>\n around some broken thing;<\/p>\n <\/p>\n and stripping out its sinews<\/p>\n in\u00a0a clueless, botched dissection,<\/p>\n they\u00a0had their fill and rose again<\/p>\n into the swirl of the air<\/p>\n like charred scraps above a bonfire.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n (Coragyps atratus)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n David Cooke<\/strong> won a Gregory Award in 1977.
