\nfrom a burnt spar of mountain ash
\nthe coarse\u00a0 talk of a raven blackens air
\ntells me your drinking drives you to death.
\nA jag of smooth limestone struck in gravel
\nchurch\u2019s upended ship\u2019s hull brims
\nlight-songs as spilled water, its hammer
\nbeamed roof no longer watertight
\nspills a line of Aeschylus or Heraclitus
\nappositely carved – we shall require
\nyour Ancient Greek Dictionary, there
\nfor the river is no longer the same
\nand call no man happy. The crow calls
\nits wordless liturgy of riteless discord.
\nThose aphorisms from the fifth century
\nof Zeno\u2019s paradox, or Cretan liar
\nyou loved, still echo in my head.
\nBy the broken wall, a ditch gathers
\nsnow-covered moss, grey-pocked
\nthe early crocii snub earth, push through
\npurple, gold, the colours of the dead.<\/p>\n
